Pets

It’s strange how some things can be so alike but so different. Although they are technically their own species, many people consider gryphons loosely to be birds, and certainly they seem more bird-like than mammalian. Gryphons also seem to enjoy the company of smaller birds, especially the ones that travel in groups, and have even been observed tending to communities of sparrows and finches. Some have even openly referred to wild birds as being “pets,” although they never try to contain the birds.

Thankfully the birds seem to find the company of gryphons desirable also, and the arrangement is a mutual one. The small birds are protected from hawks and other hunters, and the gryphon enjoys the amusing antics of its charges. One gryphon was less successful with its endeavours when it tried to keep the company of a single goose, but the goose was less open to new friendships.
