Some familiars have… unfortunate names. Many are named by excited, giggly children, and that is how we ended up with a dragon named Umbra, short for Umbrella. She was found in the rain, covering her head with her wings as if they were umbrellas and… the name stuck.

Familiars can be very sensitive about their names and their place in the world of mages – they like to feel included and accepted. There are certain unspoken rules about naming a familiar, and many mages even wait for the familiars to name themselves, and some names end up changing with time as personalities grow. While she could change it, Umbrella has accepted her given moniker but is grateful that “Umbra” at least sounds cool and mysterious.
