Last autumn, a terrible storm swept through the valley and blew down a great many of the old trees. One lost tree was the home of this little spirit.
Things are not over for this spirit, or this tree. There is more to come for them both, as the stump hosts fungi and insects, and dares out some new branches and leaves. Animals will live in the fallen trunk, and new forest life will grow from the eventual decay.
Much like the tree’s lingering stump, the spirit mostly sleeps, tucked away in itself, awaiting its next stage. It will have a new role, soon, when the world around it recovers and adapts. We come by every day to check on it, and each day it grows stronger – we have taken to offering it some food, which it eats with a growing enthusiasm. Change is finally afoot!
