When the winter winds howl like lonely wolves high in the mountain, you may well be hearing a snow spirit. Mostly they wander alone in the sky, but sometimes they sink with the flakes to earth, and seek some harmless company.
Sometimes they run as deer, or caribou. Other times, rabbits or hares. But often, they favour the company of a wolf pack, and will change their form to blend in.
As the snows pass and the winter falls quiet, the spirit will drift away like diamond dust in the daylight. The remaining wolves will sing softly the following night, but their world quickly returns to normal.
